Drew Brees breaks NFL all-time passing record in style

New Orleans Saints

Drew Brees became the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards on Monday night, and there was no better way to do it than with a touchdown.

Drew Brees has now become the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards, and he did it in true Brees style.

He achieved this historic milestone by throwing a pitch-perfect pass to wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith, who took it 62 yards for a touchdown, and with that, Brees took his rightful place on NFL’s Mount Rushmore. Sure, Brees got a little help from the Washington Redskins, who did little to try to chase down Smith, but none of that really matters, because Brees is now the NFL’s all-time passing leader.

The Football Gods made this night perfect for Brees.

Not only did he achieve this record with a touchdown pass, but he also did it at home in the Superdome, in front of the fans that he gave hope to after he arrived in New Orleans in 2006.

At that time, the city was struggling to come back from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, and the Saints were being hounded with rumors of relocation. Brees himself was looking for redemption after the San Diego Chargers refused to pay him the salary he deserved.

So in essence, the two were a match made in heaven, and not only did Brees make the Saints, for the first time in their history, a true contender year-in and year-out, but he lifted the city from the depths of despair and helped bring it back to its Cajun-inspired glory.

That is why Brees passing Peyton Manning as the NFL’s all-time leading passer, and doing it in New Orleans, was such a momentous and special occasion not only for Brees but for New Orleans as a whole.

And there couldn’t have been any other way than to do it with some Big Easy flair.
