An engraged Jerry Hughes confronted an official in the tunnel following Buffalo’s 21-17 loss in Miami on Sunday afternoon.
Jerry Hughes was clearly not in a good mood on Sunday afternoon.
For one thing, the defensive end for the Buffalo Bills was obviously frustrated that his team let a victory over their division rival Miami Dolphins slip away, losing 21-17 at Hard Rock Stadium. But Hughes was upset about something much more than that.
In particular, Hughes was upset with one of the game’s officials, so much so that he chased him down in the tunnel after the game and confronted him. Had he not been restrained by teammates and other people in the vicinity, the situation may have gotten very ugly.
In a video, we can clearly hear Hughes shouting “I’ll catch you! I’ll catch you!” as he’s being led away by a teammate.
It was a very bizarre situation. We aren’t sure exactly what it was that set Hughes off, but something clearly happened with this official. According to Mike Rodak, ESPN’s Buffalo Bills reporter, Hughes was accusing the referee of calling him a “bitch.”
Per Rodak, the NFL will be looking into the video and taking the proper actions in regards to this incident. As for the true reasoning behind Hughes’ anger with the official, hopefully we will hear some more news about it in the near future.
All we know right now is that the Bills were in position to win this game against the Dolphins. A very costly penalty on Jordan Phillips in the fourth quarter, called for taunting his former team, gave Miami an opportunity to score the go-ahead touchdown and come out on top.
The win kept the Dolphins in the AFC Wild Card race, while the loss dropped the Bills to 4-8. Had Buffalo not shot itself in the foot and come out on top, who knows if Hughes would’ve still been angry enough to actually confront an official in the tunnel.
Regardless, it was a very strange incident wrapped up in a very strange Bills season.
