Broncos, Vic Fangio express vote of confidence in Case Keenum

NFL

The Broncos seem poise to roll with Case Keenum under new head coach, Vic Fangio, as the coach publicly addressed the quarterback’s future today.

The Denver Broncos enter the Vic Fangio head coaching era already with support for last year’s free agent signing Case Keenum. The new head coach met with the Denver media today addressing the state of the team’s quarterback position.

“Right now Case Keenum is our quarterback,” Fangio said. “I’ve had the good fortune — or misfortune, since I’m standing here, good fortune — of seeing him at his best in his career when he played for Minnesota last year, being in our division at the time. So I know what he’s capable of and we’re going to try to get that out of him.”

Fangio is pointing out Keenum’s successful 2017 season with the Minnesota Vikings that saw the quarterback lead the team to an 11-3 record as the starter, and all the way to the NFC title game. The new Broncos head coach was on the Chicago Bears staff at the time of Keenum’s magical run in Minnesota. Keenum led the Vikings to a season sweep of Fangio’s Bears. The coach is hoping that’s the Keenum he’ll be coaching in Denver.

The quarterbacks poised to hit the free agent market this off-season offer a potential upgrade over Keenum. With the likes of Nick Foles, Teddy Bridgewater and Joe Flacco headlining the group, it’s telling that Fangio already committed to rolling with Keenum shortly after becoming the Broncos head coach. Makes you think the route he and Broncos President of Football Operations, John Elway, want to take is with Keenum starting, while potentially developing his replacement from the 2019 NFL Draft.

The goal for Denver is to get the most out of Keenum, which they hope brings out the quarterback he showed he could be in Minnesota. So far, he has a vote of confidence from his new head coach. We’ll just have to see how long that confidence lasts.
